Well now, let me tell you about this fella, Cliff Godwin. He’s a baseball coach, see? Born back on February 2nd, 1978, over in a place called Snow Hill, North Carolina. Ain’t that a funny name? Snow Hill! But you know, it don’t snow much around there. Anyway, he’s done real well for himself, but let’s start at the beginning.
Cliff, he didn’t just wake up one day and decide he’s gonna be a big-shot coach. Nah, it all started when he was a young’un, going to Greene Central High School in Snow Hill. That’s where he first picked up the love for the game, you know? After high school, he didn’t waste no time, off he went to East Carolina University. Now that’s a big place for baseball, and he didn’t take long to get his feet wet. He redshirted his freshman year, which means he didn’t play, but he stayed around the team, learning the ropes.
When he finally got out there, Cliff played as a catcher for the East Carolina Pirates. And let me tell ya, he didn’t just play for a season or two. No sir, he stuck around for four years, starting 126 games. That’s a lot! And by the time he was done, he had a batting average of .322 with 15 home runs. That’s some serious talent right there. He also served as co-captain of the team for three years. So, this guy, he’s not just about hitting and catching, he’s a leader, too!
Now, after his playing days were over, Cliff wasn’t done with the game just yet. No, he decided to take his skills and start teaching others. He didn’t just jump into some big fancy job, either. He started out small, coaching over at Kinston High School in Kinston, North Carolina. From there, he worked his way up, eventually becoming the head coach of East Carolina University’s baseball team, the Pirates. And you know what? He’s been there ever since, doing a darn good job, if you ask anyone around here.
Under Cliff’s leadership, the East Carolina Pirates have made a name for themselves in college baseball. They’ve had 14 NCAA Regional appearances and even made it to the College World Series twice. Now, that’s no small feat! And if you think that’s impressive, just wait till you hear this: in July 2022, they gave Cliff a contract extension through 2029. That means they’re sticking with him for a good while longer. I reckon that’s a sign that he’s doing something right!
But Cliff didn’t just stop there. He also spent some time coaching over at LSU, helping them with their offense and working with the catchers. LSU’s no slouch of a school, either, so you know he’s got a good head on his shoulders when it comes to the game.
So, all in all, Cliff Godwin’s had quite the journey. From a small-town boy in North Carolina to coaching at one of the best baseball programs in the country, he’s done a lot of things right. He’s worked hard, led by example, and taught a whole bunch of young folks how to play the game of baseball the right way. And, from what I can tell, he’s only just getting started!
So, if you ever get the chance to watch one of his teams play, you best not miss it. I hear they put on a mighty fine show!
