This here’s about Joe Namath, you know, that football fella. He was a big shot, that one. Played for them…what were they called…the New York Jets, yeah, that’s it. Long time ago, in the 60s and 70s, seems like a hundred years ago now.
They called him “Broadway Joe,” fancy name, ain’t it? He played for them Jets for a good long while, 13 seasons, that is. Then he went off to the Los Angeles Rams, played there just a year, then he retired I think.
This Joe Namath home, used to be a big deal, I reckon. Back in them days. He was a star, ya see. People loved him, they did. He was good at that football, throwing that ball around. He was a quarterback, they called it. I don’t know much about football, never watched it much. But Joe, he was famous. Everybody knew his name back then.
- He was good at other things too, not just football.
- They say he was real good at basketball in high school.
- And even got offered to play baseball, the professional kind. But he chose football.
He was even in them movies and on the television. Joe Namath’s home was probably filled with all them fancy things, movie cameras and such. He was a celebrity, you know? Big time. Like them movie stars, but for football. He was the first one, I think, to make a real big deal out of being famous for football.
He got himself married, too, that Joe. To some woman named Deborah Mays, I read somewhere. 1984, that was. Lasted ’til, let me see, 1999, I believe. Long enough, I suppose. People get divorced these days, don’t they? Nothing like the old days.
Joe Namath, he made a lot of money, too. Back in 1965, he signed some big contract, biggest one ever, they said. $427…thousand, I think it was. A lot of money, that. More money than I ever seen in my whole life. More money than you could count, maybe. Lord knows what he did with it all. Bought a big house, I reckon. Maybe a couple. This Joe Namath home deal must have been important to him.
They say he lives down in Florida now, this Joe Namath. Sunshine State, they call it. Must be nice, warm all the time. Better than here, that’s for sure. He’s probably got a big old house down there, too. With a pool, maybe. All them rich folks got pools, don’t they?
He’s getting on
