Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this Baltimore Orioles home run chain thing, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. It all started when I saw some folks talking about the Orioles’ new celebration online. Apparently, they ditched the old home run chain this year. Curious, right? I had to dig deeper.
First, I did a little research to find out what this whole “home run chain” thing was about. Turns out, the Orioles are a baseball team from Baltimore and they’ve won the World Series three times, in ’66, ’70, and ’83. The team started as a minor league team in Milwaukee way back in 1894, called the Brewers.
I went down a rabbit hole about how they chose the song “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” back in like, 1975. Seems like some guy named Mark Belanger suggested it to the general manager, Frank Cashen, who wanted some new tunes for the fans. Wild, huh?
Then I found out about this “Fired Up Guy” who apparently handed an orange chain with a foam “O’s” thing to some player’s kid during a game against Boston. That got me thinking, maybe I could make one of these chains myself.
So I gathered some materials, you know, the usual stuff – foam, an orange chain, glue, and all that. Oh, and I found some “officially licensed MLB” foam pieces. Figured that would make it look more legit. I spent a few hours cutting, gluing, and assembling the whole thing. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, it looked like a home run chain, right?
I even watched some videos online to see how the players used it during games. Apparently, Cedric Mullins and Ramn Uras were the first ones to use the chain. There’s also something called the “homer hose” now, where players drink from it after hitting a home run. I saw Ryan Mountcastle did it, that’s crazy, so I guess they got rid of the chain this year.
My Takeaway
- Making the chain was a fun little project. It’s not something I’d usually do, but it was cool to learn about the Orioles’ history and their celebrations.
- I get why they do it. It’s a fun way to celebrate and get the team hyped up.
- I’m not sure if I’ll actually use the chain for anything, maybe I’ll just hang it up as a reminder of this whole experience.
All in all, it was a fun little experiment. I learned a bit about baseball, got crafty, and now I have a homemade Orioles home run chain. Not bad for a random idea I got from the internet, right?
