Okay, so I was all set for my usual evening of League of Legends. You know, just a couple of matches to unwind after a long day. But then, bam! Vanguard error code 148 pops up, and my game just wouldn’t start. Talk about frustrating!

I’m not gonna lie, my first instinct was to just slam my fist on the desk. But, I took a deep breath and decided to get to the bottom of this.
Troubleshooting Time
I started with the basics, obviously:
- Restarting the Game and Client: Seemed too simple, but hey, sometimes it works. I closed everything – the game, the Riot Client, even made sure they weren’t hiding in the Task Manager. No luck.
- Rebooting My PC: The classic “turn it off and on again.” Still nothing. I was starting to get worried at this point.
- Running as Administrator: Gave the Riot Client and League of Legends all the permissions I could. Still that pesky 148 error.
- Checking My Internet Connection: Made sure my Wi-Fi was behaving. Everything else was working fine, so it wasn’t the internet.
Then, I had an inkling. I remembered reading something about Vanguard needing a clean boot sometimes. So here is what I did.
Dive into a Clean Boot
- I opened up the Run box by press Windows Key + R.
- Then, I typed in msconfig and hit Enter.
- After that, I went to the Services tab.
- Here, I found an option called Hide all Microsoft services, and I checked it.
- Then I just Click Disable all.
- Almost there! I switched to the Startup tab and clicked Open Task Manager.
- I just select each startup item and click Disable one by one.
- Finally, I restarted my computer.
Guess what? After that, my League is running smoothly and error 148 is gone!
I’m not entirely sure what exactly in the clean boot fixed it, but I’m just happy I could play again. Maybe some other program was messing with Vanguard? Who knows. All I know is, I’m back in the game!

If you’re hitting the same error, give these steps a try. Hopefully, it’ll work for you too. And if it does, let me know in the comments! We gotta help each other out, right?
