Alright, so I wanted to share my experience with trying to get my driver game up to par. My goal was to hit drives consistently like a 15 handicap player. Sounds easy, right? Well, let me tell you…

First things first, I recorded my swing. Brutal, I know. But you gotta see what’s really happening. I noticed my takeaway was all over the place – sometimes inside, sometimes outside. No wonder my ball flight was so inconsistent!
So, step one: fixed the takeaway. Watched a bunch of YouTube vids (yeah, I know, everyone does it) and focused on keeping the clubhead outside my hands for the first foot or so. Felt weird, but I kept at it.
Next, grip pressure. I realized I was death-gripping the club like I was trying to strangle it. Loosened up my hands – huge difference. More feel, more control.
Then, the big one: weight shift. I was all arms and no body. Started focusing on shifting my weight to my right side on the backswing and then transferring it to my left on the downswing. Felt like I was actually using my legs for once!
Practice, practice, practice. I went to the range three times a week, just hitting drivers. Not trying to kill it, just focusing on making solid contact and repeating the same swing over and over. This is where I really started to see improvement.

On the course? Still a work in progress. It’s one thing to hit bombs on the range, but it’s another to do it when there’s water left and OB right. I tried to take the same swing from the range to the course, and not overthink it.
What I Learned:
- Consistency is key.
- Grip pressure matters A LOT.
- Weight shift is crucial for power and control.
- Don’t try to kill it. Smooth is fast.
Am I hitting it like a 15 handicap now? Maybe, maybe not. But I’m definitely hitting it better than I was before, and I’m having more fun out on the course. Still a long ways to go, but I have a plan now, and that makes all the difference. See you on the links!
