Figuring Out Bama’s QB Situation
Alright, so everyone’s been asking about the quarterback situation down at Alabama, especially with the new coaching staff coming in. It’s been kind of a moving target, honestly. I decided to really dig in and see what I could piece together based on what’s been happening.

First thing, you obviously start with Jalen Milroe. He’s the guy who was there last year, took the snaps, won the SEC. You gotta respect that. Saw him make some big plays, saw him struggle sometimes too. The talk was all about how he’d fit with the new coaches, right? That was the big question mark I kept hearing.
Then you look at the other guys who’ve been around. Ty Simpson, people talked him up a lot when he came in. Didn’t see a ton of him last year, but the potential is supposedly there. You hear whispers from practice, this and that. Hard to know for sure from the outside looking in.
Dylan Lonergan is another name that pops up. Redshirt year, so mostly working behind the scenes. Again, mostly just practice buzz, which you learn to take with a grain of salt.
And then the new guys. They brought in that transfer, Austin Mack, from Washington. He knows the new coach’s system, so that got people talking immediately. Does that give him an edge? Maybe. You figure he didn’t transfer to just sit on the bench.
Don’t forget the freshman, Julian Sayin. Highly rated kid. Usually, freshmen take time, but you never know. Sometimes a guy just clicks, especially with a new system being put in place for everyone.

My Take After Watching Things Unfold
So, after following the reports, listening to the chatter, and just putting the pieces together from my end, here’s kinda how I see it shaking out right now. It’s not official, just my observation from trying to follow along closely:
- Jalen Milroe still feels like the guy to beat starting out. Experience matters, and he’s shown flashes of being electric. The big test is how he adapts to the new offense.
- Ty Simpson seems like the immediate backup, the guy who’s been waiting his turn. He’s probably pushing hard.
- Austin Mack is the wild card because of his connection to the new coach. I slot him in right behind Simpson, maybe competing directly with him, because knowing the playbook is a huge advantage early on.
- Dylan Lonergan and Julian Sayin feel like they’re developing, maybe battling for that next spot or getting ready for the future. Sayin especially, being the true freshman.
But honestly? It feels messy. It feels like they got a returning starter, a couple of guys who’ve been waiting, a transfer who knows the system, and a hotshot freshman. That’s a lot of variables. DeBoer’s got his work cut out for him figuring out who gives them the best chance. It’s not as simple as just plugging one guy in. They all bring something different.
This whole thing isn’t set in stone. I’ve seen these depth charts change fast, especially after spring ball and heading into fall camp. One good scrimmage, one bad practice, and things can flip. So, what I’ve laid out here? That’s just my read on it today, after trying to follow the whole process since the coaching change. We’ll see how it actually looks come game day.
