Alright, let’s talk about this HR/9 in MLB The Show, ya know, the baseball video game. I ain’t no expert, but I play it sometimes when the grandkids come over. They’re always yellin’ about “home runs” and stuff, so I figured I’d try and make sense of it all.
Now, this HR/9 thing, from what I gather, it’s about how many home runs a pitcher gives up every nine innings. Like, if a pitcher has a high HR/9, that means he’s gettin’ shelled, balls flyin’ out the park left and right. If it’s low, well, he’s keepin’ them hitters in check, ain’t lettin’ ’em go yard too often.
So, how important is it? Seems like a big deal to me. Nobody wants a pitcher who’s always givin’ up dingers. My grandson, he gets real mad when his pitcher gives up a homer. Says it “ruins his whole game plan.” Kids these days, so serious about their games!
- Good HR/9: Means fewer home runs allowed. Pitcher’s doin’ good.
- Bad HR/9: Means lots of home runs allowed. Pitcher’s gettin’ hammered.
From what I hear, some pitchers, they just got a knack for givin’ up home runs. Maybe their pitches ain’t got enough “stuff” on ’em, or maybe they just hang ’em right over the plate, like a big ol’ meatball. My husband used to say, “hangin’ a curveball like laundry on a clothesline.” He knew a thing or two about baseball, bless his heart.
Now, hittin’ home runs, that’s a different story. Them young fellas in the game, they got all sorts of fancy ways to swing the bat. I seen ’em usin’ the “power swing,” tryin’ to knock the cover off the ball. They got these different “hitting interfaces” and “swing types,” sounds complicated if you ask me. Back in my day, you just swung the bat and hoped for the best!
But it ain’t just about swingin’ hard. Seems like there’s some science to it too. Somethin’ about “swing plane” and “launch angle.” Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me, but I guess it matters if you wanna hit them home runs. They talk about warmin’ up with a lighter bat, learnin’ to hit the curveball… all this stuff!
And then there’s the stats, oh lord, the stats! They got RBIs, runs, strikeouts, walks… it’s enough to make your head spin. My grandson, he’s always braggin’ about his RBIs and home runs. Says he broke some kinda record in the game. I just nod and say, “That’s nice, dear.” I don’t understand half of it, but it makes him happy.
So, if you wanna win in MLB The Show, it seems like you gotta pay attention to this HR/9 stuff. Get yourself some good pitchers who don’t give up too many home runs, and then learn how to hit them yourself. It ain’t rocket science, but it ain’t easy neither. Just like life, I guess. You gotta work hard and have a little luck on your side.
And remember, even if your pitcher gives up a home run, it ain’t the end of the world. Just gotta keep fightin’ and try to score some runs of your own. That’s what baseball’s all about, right? And if you lose, well, there’s always another game. Just like in life, you pick yourself up and keep on swingin’.
One last thing, them young fellas told me if you press a button on the controller, the ball will go far. Square they call it. And the crowd goes wild when that ball clears the fence. Gives you a good feeling it does, even if you’re just watching. Makes you want another piece of pie or something.
