Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Josh Schertz fella and this SLU thing. I ain’t no fancy pants college professor, so I’m gonna tell it to ya straight, just like it is.
Josh Schertz, he’s the new basketball coach at Saint Louis University, or SLU as them city folks call it. Heard tell he came over from Indiana State. Folks there were probably real sad to see him go, ‘specially after they almost won that NIT thing. Heartbreakin’, they say. But that’s how it goes sometimes, ain’t it? One door closes, another one opens.
- Now, SLU, they went and hired this fella. And they’re real happy about it, seems like. Say he’s a good man, a real leader. Folks at the university, they like his style. Says he’s gonna build a program everyone can be proud of. That’s what they want, you know? Something to cheer for.
- And this basketball, it ain’t just about throwing a ball in a hoop, no sir. It’s about community, they say. Bringing folks together. Sounds nice, don’t it? Like a big ol’ family get-together, but with more bouncing.
This Josh guy, he’s got his own way of doin’ things, they call it a “high-octane offense.” Sounds powerful, like a tractor engine revved up and ready to go. They say it’s fun to watch, too. Efficient and entertainin’. That’s what people want, I reckon. Not some slow, boring game where nothin’ happens. They want excitement, somethin’ to get their blood pumpin’.
And the money, well, that’s a whole ‘nother story. These coaches, they make a pretty penny. The head coaches, they get paid a lot, the fellas coaching the men’s teams even more. More than what I make in a lifetime, probably. And they got assistants too, lots of ’em. Help ’em out with all that coachin’ stuff. It’s a big operation, this basketball business.
Saint Louis, that’s a big city, they say. Lots of folks there, and they love their sports. So, this Josh, he’s got his work cut out for him. Gotta build a good team, get folks excited. Gotta make sure them young fellas play their hearts out.
They hired him, and some writer fella, he gave SLU an A-plus for it. That’s good, right? Means they did somethin’ right. Guess they think this Josh is the real deal. Hope he is, for their sakes. Nothin’ worse than gettin’ your hopes up and then bein’ disappointed.
So, this Josh Schertz, he’s at SLU now. Gonna coach basketball, build a program, bring folks together. That’s the plan, anyway. Only time will tell if he can do it. But folks seem hopeful. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it? Hope is a good thing to have.
And the folks there in Saint Louis, they are happy to have him. The big sports writer fella gave them an A-plus for it, so I guess he must be doing something right. They like his leadership style, and they think he can win games. It ain’t just about winning, though, they say. It’s about community, about character, about working hard. That’s good to hear, I guess. People oughta have character, ain’t that the truth.
He says he can’t wait to start his work there. Well, good for him, I say. Work hard, do your best, and see what happens. That’s all any of us can do, really. Whether you’re coachin’ basketball or plantin’ corn, you just gotta give it your all.
