So, I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter online lately about playing older games on new consoles, and it got me thinking about Assassin’s Creed Unity. I remember it being a bit of a mess when it first launched, but I also remember it being pretty darn beautiful. I have a PS5 now, and I was wondering, can we get this game to run at a smooth 60 fps in 2024?
First things first, I grabbed my old Assassin’s Creed Unity disc. Yeah, I still buy physical copies sometimes, sue me. Anyway, the key here is to install the game without updating it. That’s right, we’re going old school, playing it like it’s 2014 all over again. I popped the disc in, let it install, and held my breath.
- Inserted the AC Unity disc into my PS5.
- Installed the game, but crucially, I made sure it didn’t connect to the internet and download any patches.
- Fired up the game.
Here’s what I did, step-by-step:
And guess what? It worked! The game was running way smoother than I remembered. I’m pretty sure I was hitting a near-constant 60 fps. It felt like a whole new experience. I mean, just walking around 18th-century Paris was a treat. The parkour felt amazing, and the sword fighting, oh man, it was so much more responsive. I was actually pulling off those cool moves I always struggled with back in the day.
Now, there’s a catch. By playing the unpatched version, I was locked out of multiplayer and any DLCs that came after launch. If you have a digital copy of the game or you update your disc version then you’ll be stuck with the 30 FPS patched version. Also, I was hearing that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is locked to 30 FPS no matter what you do on consoles. Bummer!
But honestly, for a single-player experience, this is the way to play Assassin’s Creed Unity in 2024. I got a copy of the game from PS Store since it had a big discount. I’ve been playing Valhalla but man, I just don’t like that the last three games turned into RPGs. So I decided to play Unity and Syndicate again. I also realized that cross-play is not supported on newer consoles like Xbox Series X and PS5 for Unity. But who cares about that anyway, right? It’s all about that sweet, sweet frame rate. If you’ve got a PS5 and a copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity lying around, I highly recommend giving this a try. You might be surprised at how well this game holds up when it’s running smoothly.
