Okay, so I was messing around with crossword puzzles the other day, as one does, and I got completely stumped by this one clue: “chop down with an axe.” I mean, I stared at it for a good five minutes, totally blank. My brain was just circling, circling, circling… nothing.

I tried to think of all the axe-related words I knew. “Swing”? Nope. “Cut”? Too short. “Fell”? Maybe, but it felt off somehow. I was getting seriously frustrated.
So, I did what any normal person would do: I went digging online. I typed in the clue, hoping for a miracle. And wouldn’t you know it, the answer popped right up!
The “Aha!” Moment
Turns out, the solution was “HEW”. H-E-W. Three little letters.
I’m not gonna lie, at first, I didn’t use the internet and I was try to find the answer.
- First,I racked my brain.I tried every word I could conjure related to axes and chopping.
- Second,I even acted it out a bit, pretending to swing an axe in my living room (my cat was very confused).
- Finally,I looked it up. I typed it in. Bang. There it was.
It was one of those “duh!” moments. Like, of course! It’s so obvious now. But before, my mind was just a total blank slate. It’s funny how the brain works sometimes. You can be so close, yet so far, from the answer.

Anyway, I filled in “HEW,” finished the crossword (feeling pretty darn smug, I must admit), and decided I needed to document this epic journey. So, here we are. Lesson learned: sometimes the simplest words are the trickiest, and there’s no shame in a little online assistance when your brain decides to take a vacation.
