Alright folks, let me tell you about this Laver Cup thing. Honestly, after watching it for years, I’ve come to the conclusion: it’s kinda fake.

It all started a few years back. I remember being super hyped for the first one. All the big names, Federer, Nadal, playing on the same team? Sounded epic. So, I cleared my schedule, got the snacks ready, and settled in to watch.
The first couple of matches were okay, decent tennis. But then I started noticing things. Like, the intensity just wasn’t there. Players were smiling and laughing even after losing points. Hugging each other between sets. It felt more like a friendly exhibition than a real competition.
I kept watching each year, hoping it would get more competitive. Nope. Same vibe. Lots of fanfare, cool team uniforms, but the actual tennis felt… staged. It’s like everyone’s just there to have a good time and put on a show, not actually fight for the win.
To really understand what I mean, let me give you an example. Last year, there was this match where one of the European players was clearly struggling. He was down a set and looked exhausted. Usually, in a real tournament, a player would dig deep, fight for every point, maybe even get a little angry. But in this match, he just seemed… resigned. He barely put up a fight in the second set and lost easily. It was like he knew it didn’t really matter.
And it’s not just the players. The captains, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, are legendary figures, but even they seemed to be treating it more like a vacation than a serious coaching job. Lots of smiling, lots of clapping, but not much actual strategy or motivation.

Don’t get me wrong, I still watch it. It’s fun to see the legends together, and sometimes there are some cool moments. But I go in with the expectation that it’s more of an entertainment event than a legitimate tennis tournament.
So, yeah, that’s my take on the Laver Cup. Maybe I’m just being a cynical old guy, but after years of watching, it just feels like a glorified exhibition match. It’s tennis, but not really tennis. You know?
Anyway, that’s my rant for today. What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or do you see it too?
